Southern Virginia University Women’s Soccer Advances to USA South Championship Behind Record-Setting Win

Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team (12-6-1) exploded offensively on Wednesday night, defeating third-seeded Greensboro College (11-7-2) by a score of 9-0 to advance to the USA South Conference Championship match.

The Knights wasted no time, scoring twice in the opening seven minutes. Xoie Warner and Delin Peterson each found the back of the net early to give Southern Virginia an immediate 2-0 lead.

Just minutes later, Warner and Peterson connected again—this time with Peterson setting up Warner for her second goal of the match to make it 3-0. Warner would complete her first-half hat trick in the 28th minute, once again assisted by Peterson, who dribbled down the end line before finding Warner in front of goal.

The scoring barrage continued as Ashley Hamblin added a fifth goal, finishing off a sequence that began with Peterson threading a pass through defenders to Warner, who crossed it perfectly to Hamblin for the finish. Peterson and Warner linked up one more time before a break, as Peterson sent a ball across the box that Warner buried for her fourth goal of the night, tying the USA South single-game tournament record for goals.

In the closing minutes, the Knights kept up the pressure, with McKenna Currey and Estee Schneider both scoring in the 88th minute, followed by Sydney Bastian's strike in the 89th to close the 9-0 victory.

All three Knight goalkeepers—Beth Manwill, Chloë Miller, and Ruth Sumner—combined for the shutout, with Manwill leading the effort with three saves. In total, 26 Knights saw action in the dominant win.

Warner tied the USA South Tournament single-game record with four goals and now ties the overall tournament record with six total goals.

Peterson broke the tournament single-game record for assists with five—also setting a new overall tournament mark for most assists.

With the win, second-seeded Southern Virginia advances to the USA South Conference Championship, where they will face top-seeded Brevard College on Saturday, November 8, in a rematch of last year's thrilling semifinal that saw the Knights advance in a penalty shootout. Southern Virginia now looks to capture its second USA South Tournament title in program history.
