Greensboro, NC - The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team extended their record-breaking win streak to an astounding twenty games on Tuesday night. In their last road game of the regular season, the Knights comfortably defeated Greensboro College, 82-30, keeping their undefeated record against conference opponents intact.
Courtesy of thirteen straight points to start the game, the Knights had already left no doubt of why they're the top seed in the USA South leading into next week's conference tournament. Addison Newman scored eleven of those points, doing so in just three minutes. Southern Virginia held that advantage through the end of the quarter as Greensboro began to step up their game. The second quarter shared a similar trend in which the Knights extended their lead thanks to a quick start. Taylor Hoopes capped off the half with a steal and score, giving her seven first half points and her team a 36-13 advantage.
Defense was at the center of the third quarter with the Knights holding their opponents to just four points. Their relentless defense was rewarded with 15 steals, led by Addison Newman, Alyssa Weiland, and Maria Savvun who each had three apiece. Weiland also added 11 rebounds and 6 assists to lead both teams in those categories. The fourth quarter turned into a Southern Virginia offensive onslaught as they recorded 31 points in the final frame.
Before the final buzzer, Addison Newman had registered 18 points and shot an efficient six-for-twelve from the field. It's her second highest output of the season and puts her on a positive trajectory heading into the postseason, the time of year when she tends to play her best. The Knights will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, February 22nd, in Knight Arena. They'll host Pfeiffer with tip-off slated for 2:00 PM.
