Danville, KY - The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team played their third consecutive game on the road during a brief visit to Kentucky for a matchup with Centre College. Unfortunately for the Knights, a forgettable first quarter foiled their hopes of victory despite several good stretches of play. The game ended in a 20-8 victory for their opponents.
Centre was quick to jump on Southern Virginia in the opening quarter, scoring in their first possession less than a minute after the opening faceoff. A few minutes later, an explosion of offense resulted in three more goals for Centre and a 4-0 lead. They extended the lead even further before the Knights managed to find their footing in the opening stages of the second quarter.
Hunter Jones picked up a ground ball for the Knights after the opening faceoff which triggered a relentless attack on the Colonels net. After four quality chances, Garrett Zollinger found twine off of a pass from Tyson Mauri for their first strike of the afternoon. Just over a minute later, Clay Haacke kept the ball rolling with a solo effort to trim the deficit even further.
Haacke, along with senior Peyton Merwin, combined for a couple of more tallies in the quarter to keep the Knights level with Centre in the third. However, the Colonels scored three unanswered to close out the half. They owned the third quarter as well, only conceding one goal to the Knights which was scored by Tyson Mauri. In the fourth and final frame, Southern Virginia returned to the form they found early in the second and played even with their opponents.
Clay Haacke completed a hattrick in the fourth quarter while Abe Salmon and JT Cutrer also found the scoresheet for the Knights. Tyson Mauri recorded a team high four points while Peyton Merwin was the third Knight to record a multi-point game. Defensively, JT Cutrer and Scott DuPaix each caused two turnovers and Jace Lightfoot made twelve saves by the final buzzer.
At long last, the Knights return home to Buena Vista in preparation for their first home game in nearly three weeks. They'll host SUNY Delhi on Saturday, March 1st, at noon, and look to remain undefeated on their home turf.
