Winston-Salem, NC - To open a string of five straight games on the road, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team took care of business against Salem College with an 81-48 victory. Addison Newman made the most of her shots and finished with a team-high of 17 points to help the Knights remain unbeaten in the conference.
Salem showed no fear in the opening quarter against the league-leading Knights. With less than two minutes remaining, Salem held a 12-10 lead as Southern Virginia was plagued by poor shooting. Fortunately for them, Asia Canty's three-pointer and a steal and score from Addison Newman vaulted the Knights into the lead before the end of the quarter.
The script completely flipped in the second frame. Newman picked up where she left off with a three-pointer just eleven seconds into their first possession. Six different Knights found the scoresheet in a thirty-point quarter. After opening the quarter with a three-point lead, their advantage had swelled to 45-25 after Saydee Allred struck from beyond the arc to end the quarter.
Out of the halftime break, the Knights threw in their original starting lineup to preserve their big lead. Aysia Foster dominated the paint and converted on two early lay-ups. She also wound up leading her team in rebounds and blocks again. The Knights led by as much as thirty points during the quarter and were able to cruise to their sixteenth straight victory.
Addison Newman went seven of eleven from the field to lead the team in scoring and also did her part on defense, finishing with three steals. Taylor Hoopes added eight points and collected a season-high of five rebounds. On Saturday, the Knights will look to keep the ball rolling as they visit Meredith College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
