Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team suffered a 100-72 loss to Pfeiffer University, marking a tough setback as they continue their push toward the postseason.
The Knights started the game competitively, keeping pace early before adversity struck. Eli Ballstaedt suffered an injury, and Tyler Kartchner picked up early foul trouble, making it difficult for Southern Virginia to slow down Pfeiffer's high-powered offense.
With the score tied at 12-12, the Falcons seized control with a 10-0 scoring run to take the lead. Despite a brief response led by Kade Harrick and Tillman Johnson, Pfeiffer kept its foot on the gas, stringing together another 14 unanswered points to push the Knights into a 22-point deficit.
Contributions from Hyrum McConkie, DJ Green, and Christian Goode kept Southern Virginia's offense moving, but Pfeiffer's momentum was too much to overcome. By halftime, the Knights trailed 53-33.
Kartchner opened the second half with a pair of quick baskets, but Pfeiffer's offensive efficiency remained overwhelming as the Falcons maintained control and closed out the game with a dominant 100-72 victory.
Pfeiffer shot an impressive 56.5% (39-69) from the field and 42.1% (8-19) from three-point range, while Southern Virginia finished at 46.7% (28-60) from the field but struggled from deep, shooting just 18.2% (2-11) from beyond the arc. The Falcons also capitalized on their opportunities, scoring 20 second-chance points and 27 fast-break points, making it difficult for the Knights to close the gap.
Despite the loss, Southern Virginia remains atop the USA South Conference standings at 9-2, though Pfeiffer is now closing in at 8-2.
The Knights will look to bounce back at home on Saturday, February 15th, at 2:00 PM, when they host NC Wesleyan. The Battling Bishops edged Southern Virginia 67-63 in their last meeting, and with just three games left in the regular season, the Knights aim to finish strong.
