Greensboro, N.C. - Looking for their first conference win of the season, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team matched up with the Greensboro College Pride. The Knights took care of business, winning by a score of 20-3.
Things started off well for Greensboro by taking quick command of the ball. A quick couple of shots proved successful when one found the net, giving the Pride momentum. However, Makenzie Mickelsen stepped up and ripped a shot into the goal to change the tide, knotting up the score. Mickelsen and Ellie Patterson would team up throughout the first to score five goals.
Sophomore Kenzie Poulsen took control toward the end of the quarter, rifling in a few of her own. Mia Richards would get into the mix with another goal and forced two turnovers from the Pride, limiting them in their attack.
With Southern Virginia in full control, the Knights slowed the pace in the second quarter and dominated possession. Yazmin Manjarrez put her playmaking ability on display and would lead the team in assists with three on the day. On the other end, the Knights showcased their defense prowess throughout the quarter. Mariela Perez stepped up to claim multiple ground balls and won a couple draw controls while Mickelsen ended the day with a season high of eight. Southern Virginia led 11-2 at the half.
In the third quarter, Manjarrez added to her big day with two goals, growing the already steep lead. With the fourth quarter underway, Poulsen added two more goals with Patterson, Mickelsen, and Perez grabbing one each as well. The game ended on a high note when freshman Aubrey Reynolds scored the first goal of her career, decisively ending the game with a win of 20-3.
Poulsen, Mickelsen, and Patterson led the Knights attack, scoring a combined fourteen goals. The Knights were also able to produce plenty of scoring opportunities thanks to numerous draw controls from Richards, Mickelsen, and Patterson. Riding newfound energy, the Knights return home to host William Peace in another conference game on Saturday, March 22nd at 3:00 PM.
