Boston, MA - The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team opened a three-match swing in Massachusetts against one of the premier teams in the country, Wentworth. Despite dropping the opening set, their first set loss of the season, the Knights overcame the deficit to topple the eleventh ranked team in the nation, 3-1.
The Knights were looking to remain perfect against nationally ranked opponents and were determined to begin a huge weekend on the right foot. However, they were in for a shocking opening frame as they quickly fell behind their opponents, trailing by as much as nine points.
Not content with their performance, the Knights led a furious rally to pull within a point, but it wasn't enough and Wentworth claimed the opening set, handing Southern Virginia its first set loss of the season.
Unfazed, Southern Virginia came back with a vengeance in the second. Kristo Bianchin led his crew on an early run of six consecutive points to take control. Wentworth did what it could to weather the storm, but a flurry of attacks from Jeremy Brown, Samuel Candland, and Christian Sheaffer proved too much, and the Knights knotted the sets at one a piece.
A series of blocks in the third set led by Kyler Evans and Gehrig Tolman helped Southern Virginia rally past the Leopards to put them on the brink of defeat. After a couple of early kills from Sheaffer in the fourth, defense was once again the catalyst in providing the Knights another lead.
Jayton Hall took center stage at a key time. He recorded three kills and a block to vault Southern Virginia into a 9-6 advantage. Jason Wang also took part in the block party, tallying both of his block assists in the early stages of the fourth set.
Fortunately for the Knights, a Wentworth attacking error helped them clinch the match and a 24th consecutive win to open the season. Offensively, the night belonged to Christian Sheaffer, who finished with 20 kills in a match for the first time this season. He, along with Kyler Evans, played superb defense at the net, taking part in a combined 11 blocks.
The Knights will be back in action tomorrow night, March 27th, against Nichols College. Start time is slated for 7:00 PM.
