Sweet Briar, VA - The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team traveled to Sweet Briar for a non-conference matchup. Looking to bounce back from a loss last weekend, eight different players scored goals for the Knights in a positive outing. The Knights dominated the Vixens and won the game by a final score of 20-2.
With numerous Knights scoring in the first quarter, the game quickly got out of hand and too far out of reach for the Vixens. The scoring started three minutes into the game and continued throughout the quarter. Makenzie Mickelsen started the scoring and set the precedence for the remainder of the period. Mickelsen assisted on a couple of goals as well, notably setting up two of Kenzie Poulsen's goals. Reagan Bullock would chip in with a goal of her own while assisting freshman Paysen Grandy for the second goal of her career.
Southern Virginia was able to deliver an onslaught of shots, thanks to three draw controls from Mia Richards, who would score the last goal of the quarter. The first quarter ended with Southern Virginia up, 8-0.
In the second quarter the scoring slowed, but the Knights prevented any large offensive pushes by the Vixens. Yazmin Manjarrez added to the fun with her second goal of her career just before Poulsen came back for her third goal of the night. Eventually, the Vixens found a spark on a couple of shots and scored their lone goal of the half. However, the Knights still headed into the locker room with a lead of 13-1.
In the second half, Richards would combine with Ellie Patterson to win five draw controls. Patterson led them on the defensive side of the ball, forcing four turnovers while still making her offensive presence known by scoring in the fourth quarter and assisting on four goals. Southern Virginia would be perfect in clears through the second half, going 4-4. Bullock and Grandy contributed two goals each in the third quarter and the scoring in the fourth was closed out by Patterson and Poulsen scoring one each.
Southern Virginia showcased the offensive abilities they have. The Knights shot 35 times and limited themselves to fourteen turnovers, while converting on 66% of clears. Standout performances from freshmen Mia Richards and Paysen Grandy were key in the Knights blowout win, 20-2.
The Knights will return home to host Methodist University to open conference play. The game will take place at Knight Stadium on Saturday, March 8th at 12:00 PM.
