Knights Fall To The Generals After Late Rally

Lexington, Va. - Southern Virginia University baseball traveled a few miles up the road to Washington and Lee University for a single game matchup Thursday. The Knights fell to the Generals late, losing 10-9.

The Knights struck fast and first with Mason Jones at the plate. Jones skied a shot to center field in the top of the second. After waiting patiently to tag up, Benjamin Horsley hurried home to put the Knights up 1-0. The Generals responded quickly with two runs of their own in the second to gain the 2-1 lead.

The next time anyone rounded the bases was the top of the fifth. Southern Virginia scored two more runs off base hits from Garrett Stauffer and Horsley. Horsley showed off his wheels again with a triple to right center. Those two left the Knights up 3-2.

It didn't take the Knights long to add to their lead in the sixth. Jones jumped at an error at shortstop to score the first run of the Knights' rally. Then with bases loaded, Stauffer was walked and brought in another run. Horsley hammered a single to left field to capitalize on the opportunity with bases loaded. Marcelino Leonardo Jr. stepped up to the plate and snuck a single through the left side, bringing home two of his teammates to record two RBIs out of four hits Leonardo would get through nine innings. A wild pitch punctuated the six run rally to allow Stempin to score, giving the Knights a 9-2 lead.

Although the Knights had some scoring opportunities late, The Generals responded, ending the seventh up one. Southern Virginia couldn't capitalize and the game ended with a score of 10-9.

Next the Knights take their talents home for a three game series against Mary Baldwin University on April 4 and 5.
