Stellar Defense Powers Southern Virginia Men’s Lacrosse Past LaGrange

LaGrange, GA - The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team took the field for the penultimate time this regular season, facing off with the Panthers from LaGrange.

Offense was difficult to come by for the Knights in the opening minutes as they fell behind 1-0. However, they took advantage of a turnover and Pierce Brinton knotted the score at one, just over five minutes into the first.

Not long after, JC Winterton continued his scoring rampage over the last couple of weeks by wiring one past the keeper to give Southern Virginia its first lead. LaGrange did not shy away from the challenge and kept pace with the Knights who would lead 4-3 after the first.

The second quarter was more like the Knights have been accustomed to over the last five games. Winterton completed an early hat trick, but the team was far from done as six straight Southern Virginia goals quieted the home crowd in a hurry. Tyson Mauri, fresh off setting a new career high for points in a season earlier this week, tallied a trio of goals in less than two minutes to help the Knights to a 10-3 advantage at the half.

In the third, Abe Salmon and Hunter Jones added to the lead, making the score 14-3. Another big story in the game was Jace Lightfoot who shut the door on the LaGrange attackers. Lightfoot made 11 of his 13 total saves in the first half which played a big part in the early lead.

The Panthers would tally a few goals in the final frame, but the damage had been done. Tyson Mauri added to another massive day, leading both teams with 4 goals and 7 points. The Knights' youth also showed out, with six different freshmen finding the back of the net. JT Cutrer led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers.
