Greensboro, N.C. - The Southern Virginia University Baseball team took on Greensboro College this weekend in a three game series. The Knights dropped the first two losing 15-9 and 10-3. Southern Virginia didn't leave Greensboro without a fight, taking game three ___.
On Friday afternoon the Knights found themselves down 10-0 early with a high scoring second inning from the Pride. That deficit didn't stop the Knights from battling back. In a high powered fifth inning the Knights put up seven runs. That effort was led by two RBIs from a Seth Lloyd single to center to give the Knights a spark and cut the deficit to eight. After a battering of base hits Southern Virginia was down 10-4. Mitch Smith came to the dish. Smith smashed a homer to add another three to the Knights fifth inning rally. The Knights closed their frame of the fifth inning down 10-7. The Knights finished the game with a 15-9 loss.
In game two the Knights had a relatively quiet game. Stockton Hall and Benjamin Horsley both had one run singles. Another error on the throw would give Southern Virginia a total of three runs to end game two down 10-3.
Those first two games left the Knights ready to strike back. The Pride and the Knights traded blows in the first two innings. Hall hammered a base hit off of a fielder's choice that put Southern Virginia up 1-0 early. Greensboro grabbed two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.Â
That pair of runs didn't phase Lloyd, who found himself at the plate after a rally that loaded the bases. Lloyd left no doubt hitting a grand slam to record the first four of his five RBIs in game three. The Pride responded with two more to close the 5-4 lead to one run.Â
The fifth and sixth innings were a slurry of singles from the Knights who knocked in one run at a time. By the end of the two frames the Knights had knocked in seven runs to gain a 12-4 lead. Hall took the mound to defend that lead in the sixth and recorded a quality save, backed by three strikeouts. Greensboro added five more by the end of the game, falling short of Southern Virginia's thirteen runs. The Knights left Greensboro with a 13-9 win.
The Knights will face Guilford College on April 20 in a single game matchup to start the last week of their regular season.
