Buena Vista, VA - On senior day in Knight Stadium, the Knights' offensive talents were on display again. After a ten goal outburst in the opening quarter, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team eased its way past Huntingdon to win the regular season finale, 19-2.
The Knights got down to business in a hurry, scoring on their opening four possessions. Ellie Patterson scored one of them and assisted on the other to continue a career year for the junior midfielder.
Senior Mariela added to the fun not long after, scoring her ninth goal of the season, fueling her team to a 8-0 lead just over five minutes in.
Putting the cherry on top to an exquisite first quarter of play, Mary Honore made her way to the front of the net and fired a shot past the Hawks goalkeeper to score the first goal of her collegiate career. It was 10-0 Southern Virginia after fifteen minutes.
The Knights were sure to get all teammates involved in the scoring the rest of the way. Mia Richards and Paysen Grandy also added goals, but it was senior Addison Newman's tally in the fourth quarter that highlighted the rest of the day.
Newman peppered the Huntingdon goal with multiple shots before finding some space just outside the crease to score the first goal of her collegiate career. Grandy scored once more for the Knights to give the team a 19-2 victory at the final buzzer.
Ellie Patterson's 8 points led the way offensively, while Sydney Bastian, Paysen Grandy, and Makenzie Mickelsen each caused three turnovers to lead the defensive effort. Mickelsen also collected 13 draw controls to lead both sides.
Following the win, the Knights honored three seniors who played their last regular season game at Knight Stadium. Reagan Bullock, Mariela Perez, and Addison Newman have appeared in a combined 118 games for the program and have been regulars in the starting lineup.
