Rocky Mount, N.C. – The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team delivered a thrilling performance in Friday's USA South Conference Semifinal, edging Pfeiffer University 4-3 to earn a spot in the USA South Championship match.
The Knights came out strong in doubles, taking two of the three matchups to secure the opening point. The No. 1 pairing of Paula Snelson and Jillian Arnold earned a commanding 6-3 win, while Lydia Delich and Remly Fry rolled to a 6-2 victory at No. 2. Pfeiffer claimed the No. 3 doubles match with a 6-0 result, but Southern Virginia walked away with the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
In singles, Snelson dominated from the top spot, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0 for her second straight sweep of the tournament. At No. 4, Remly Fry kept the momentum going with a 7-5, 6-2 win to push the Knights ahead 3-1.
Pfeiffer fought back with wins at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 to tie the match at 3-3, setting the stage for a decisive battle at No. 2 singles. After dropping the second set, Lydia Delich dug deep in the third and sealed the match with a gritty 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory, sending the Knights to the conference final.
With the win, Southern Virginia advances to the USA South Championship match, where they will face the top-seeded Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, April 26 at 2:00 PM.
