Southern Virginia Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Greensboro In First Round of USA South Tournament

Buena Vista, VA - During a weekend of great success for Southern Virginia University athletics, the men's lacrosse team added more good feelings to campus with a dominant 22-13 win over Greensboro College in the first round of the USA South tournament.

The teams traded goals in the opening five minutes before the freshman duo of JC Winterton and Abe Salmon combined for four goals, providing the Knights a 5-1 lead by the end of the first.

The Knights kept up the pressure in the following quarter, and while the physicality increased, so did the Knights lead. Tyson Mauri's marker with just over five minutes left in the half gave Southern Virginia a double-digit lead and it looked like the matchup was too overwhelming for the Pride.

Despite looking at perhaps an insurmountable deficit, Greensboro scored the next three goals to take a little bit of momentum into the locker room.

The momentum followed the Pride into the third quarter as they scored the next two goals, trimming the deficit to just five. The Knights eventually found their footing, in large part due to Abe Salmon's finishing ability. The freshman looked unstoppable and already had five goals by the end of the third.

Tyler Mauri and Isaac Finley were producing big performances on defense as well. They helped the Knights force Greensboro into 12 turnovers during the fourth quarter. Porter Alleman winning over 50% of his faceoffs was another reason Southern Virginia controlled the play for most of the afternoon.

Tyler Mauri scored the Knights' final goal of the day, picking off a pass during a Greensboro clearing attempt and sending a shot into an open goal. At the sound of the final buzzer, Southern Virginia had punched its ticket to the tournament semifinal with a 22-13 win.
