Buena Vista, Va. - Southern Virginia University Baseball closed their regular season Saturday finishing up a three game weekend series against Methodist University. The Knights took one, 4-0, and lost two, 7-3 and 16-8.
The Knights gave it their all in game one, although the Monarchs put up a steady handful of runs early. By the bottom of the eighth the Knights found themselves down 5-0. Two singles from Mason Jones and Garrett Stauffer would bring the score to 5-3. That frame closed out the scoring for game one, the Knights lost 7-3.
Southern Virginia came back with an incredible effort on the field and at the plate in game two. Marcelino Leonardo Jr. took advantage of a few fielding follies to make a single into a trip to third, as Robert Stempin scored. Leonardo Jr. jumped at another wild play returning home to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Stauffer continued to show up for Southern Virginia with a single through the left gap to score two more and record two RBIs. Jeffery Hill added another win to his pitching record behind four strikeouts in seven innings.Â
Game three was a high scoring affair. A series of shots in the third from Stauffer and Mitch Smith, gave the Knights three runs. Later, in the fifth, Southern Virginia's Seth Lloyd hit a single through the right side that brought in two. Lloyd and Stauffer led the Knights with two RBIs each. The Monarchs responded well and topped the Knights 16-8 in game three.
The Knights will continue into postseason play in the USA South Baseball Tournament.Â
