Buena Vista, Va. - Southern Virginia University Baseball split a doubleheader with Mary Baldwin University on Saturday. The Knights took game one, 13-2, and dropped game two, 6-3.
It was all Knights in game one, they put up ten runs after the third inning. That scoring run was powered by Connor Robley, Seth Lloyd, and Marcelino Leonardo Jr. Robley raked in three RBIs off of a home run and a walk with bases loaded, to lead the offense. Lloyd smoked a single up the middle to bring two of his teammates home and record two RBIs. The Knights loaded the bases and the Fighting Squirrels felt the pressure, they added three runs on walks and errors. Southern Virginia finished the third up 10-0.Â
Although the Fighting Squirrels put up a handful of runs themselves, the Knights responded with two of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Stockton Hall and Leonardo Jr. both knocked singles past the infield to record each of their second RBIs. The Knights also had a great showing on the mound in game one, Carson Bybee had five total strikeouts in four innings pitched to record his second win of the season. The Knights bested the Fighting Squirrels 13-2.Â
Game two found the Knights up early after a Garrett Stauffer single up the middle put one on the board. The Fighting Squirrels answered with a grand slam, taking the lead 4-1. The Knights could only answer with two more from a Zach Geertsen single and a sacrifice fly from Benjamin Horsley in the fifth inning. The Knights fell to the Fighting Squirrels 6-3.Â
The Knights will travel to Ferrum College for a single game matchup on April 9.
