Meredith Overpowers Southern Virginia Women’s Lacrosse

Buena Vista, VA - On a warm Thursday afternoon at Knight Stadium, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team squared off with the defending USA South Champions, Meredith College.

While the Knights put forth a dignified effort to challenge Meredith, the visitors proved why they are undefeated in the conference, winning 20-9.

Right from the whistle, the Avenging Angels wasted no time putting points on the board and the Knights quickly found themselves in a four goal deficit. Makenzie Mickelsen decided to take matters into her own hands by winning the teams first draw control and then sneaking the ball into the right side of the net for a goal.

Southern Virginia stood their ground, causing a couple of turnovers and scooping up ten ground balls throughout the quarter to prevent attacks. With only seconds left in the quarter, Kenzie Poulsen was able to score and ignite the offense.

Southern Virginia clawed their way closer to Meredith in the second quarter. Mickelsen scored again and assisted Kenzie Poulsen on one of her two goals during the quarter. Mia Richards then dazzled by stealing a botched pass and sprinting down the middle of the field to score a solo goal.

With those four goals, the Knights had pulled within four of Meredith to put a considerable amount of pressure on the defending champs. The half ended with Meredith leading 11-6.

With Meredith firing away to start the second half, Savanna Burnett played a large role in keeping the deficit to a minimum. Nonetheless, the Avenging Angels were able to score a flurry of goals. The Knights did the best they could, capitalizing on a few free position attempts. Ellie Patterson put one goal away and was followed by another from Mickelsen.

Looking to create a comeback, Mariela Perez and Patterson teamed up to force several turnovers, trying to switch the tide. Scoring stalled out for both teams until the final minutes when Patterson connected with Richards on a late goal to end the game. Despite a valiant effort, the Knights fell 20-9.
