Hampden-Sydney, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team opened their 2025 campaign on the road Thursday evening, falling to Hampden-Sydney 5-1.
The Tigers came out fast, capitalizing early with four goals in the first 32 minutes to take control of the match. Outshooting the Knights 16-0 in the first half, Hampden-Sydney's strong midfield presence limited Southern Virginia's opportunities to build momentum.
The Knights responded with renewed energy in the second half, generating offensive pressure through Kohl Simmons, Keiger Young, and Jacob Cornejo. Their persistence paid off in the 81st minute when Cornejo delivered a corner kick to Simmons, who found Tate Hickman inside the box for Southern Virginia's first goal of the season.
Goalkeepers Troy Chamberlain and Isaac Northcutt combined for 11 saves on the night, holding firm against the Tigers' relentless attack.
Southern Virginia looks to bounce back quickly, traveling to Lynchburg, Va., on Friday, August 30, for a non-conference matchup against Randolph College to close out their season-opening road trip.
