ASHLAND, Va. - Looking to produce their first winning streak of the season, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team fell victim to a late penalty and ultimately dropped a tight road contest to Randolph-Macon, 1-0.
It was just the second meeting in a decade between Southern Virginia and Randolph-Macon, with the Yellow Jackets holding the most recent win over the Knights 2022.
It was a physical, closely contested match from the start. Neither team was shy to take shots toward the opposing goal.
After an early shot on goal from Tate Hickman, the hosts were able to control play during the backend of the first half. Southern Virginia keeper Troy Chamberlain made several saves in the final 15 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
In the second, things opened up for the Knights attackers. They controlled the pace of play in the opening minutes, putting relentless pressure on the Randolph-Macon defenders.
Austin Lyman came to play, tallying two shots on goal during the half. As a team, the Knights attempted nine shots in the second, eyeing a second consecutive victory.
Despite the uptick in pressure, a penalty with under five minutes to go gave the Yellow Jackets a chance to end the stalemate. They made no mistake, vaulting to the lead and ultimately stealing the win, 1-0.
Outside the penalty, Troy Chamberlain stopped all six shots that came his way, concluding a promising week of play for the freshman.
Sam Nettesheim and Jacob Nielsen each saw all ninety minutes and played well defensively. Jackson Gorringe and Brock Hester were others to collect shots on goal.
