Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches To Close W&L Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. - It was an entertaining weekend of Southern Virginia University women's volleyball. After a loss to St. Mary's on Friday, the Knights swept Mary Washington on Saturday before falling to ninth ranked Washington and Lee in a four-set thriller to conclude play at the W&L Invitational.

Game One

Southern Virginia's first opponent of the tournament was St. Mary's College of Maryland. After leading for most of the first, the Knights allowed six straight points to ultimately drop the opening frame.

They flipped the script in the second, leading the whole way again before clinching the set on a service error. However, the next two sets went St. Mary's way to hand Southern Virginia a 3-1 defeat.

While the Knights had trouble generating a consistent attack, the defense was stellar thanks to the work of middles Ryann Vail and Summer Hahn who totaled a combined 15 blocks.

Game Two

On Saturday morning against Mary Washington, it was smooth sailing for the Knights. They outmatched the Eagles, taking each set by at least ten points to get back into the win column.

Southern Virginia's services proved difficult to handle as they racked up 14 aces. Lucy Richins tallied five and Talia Quinn added three.

Game Three

The final game of the tournament for the Knights' proved to be a valuable early-season test. Matched up with the ninth ranked team in the country, Washington and Lee, Southern Virginia was a formidable opponent.

After dropping the opening frame, the Knights received a boost from the play of Daisy Oviedo and Anne Downs. They contributed mightily during a run that saw the Knights score five of six points. Eventually, two kills from Aubrey Packer put the wraps on the set win, knotting the score with one of the top teams in the land.

The Knights battled valiantly the next two sets, but would lose in four. Aubrey Packer, Ryann Vail and Emma Broadbent recorded double figures in kills while Talia Quinn finished with a season high of 27 assists.

Looking Ahead

The Knights gear up for their home opener on Tuesday, September 9th, at 6 PM. They'll host Eastern Mennonite in Knight Arena for a non-conference matchup.
