Southern Virginia University Men’s Basketball Delivers High-Scoring Conference Win Led by Davis’ Season-High 27

Greensboro, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team earned another strong conference road victory, defeating the Pride of Greensboro College, 90–87. The win marked the Knights' fourth straight victory over Greensboro and improved Southern Virginia to 4–1 in conference play and 8–7 overall.

The Knights came out sharp and took control early, never surrendering the lead. Guards DJ Green and Tillman Johnson set the tone by scoring 11 of the Knights' first 13 points, establishing an early offensive rhythm.

Southern Virginia continued to push the pace behind Ashton Davis and Johnson, while strong defensive efforts from Jude Ballstaedt and Hyrum McConkie helped stifle the Pride. The Knights' physical defense held Greensboro to just 25.9 percent shooting (7–27) from the field in the first half, allowing Southern Virginia to build a 40–25 advantage at the break.

Green led all scorers in the first half with 14 points, while Johnson added eight and Davis chipped in seven.

Greensboro opened the second half with a 9–3 run to apply pressure, but Davis and Johnson quickly answered to halt the momentum. Davis took over in the second half, scoring 13 points in the opening 10 minutes and capping the stretch with a layup that pushed the Knights' lead to a game-high 18 points.

The Pride continued to battle, cutting the deficit to single digits with just over three minutes remaining. A pair of Southern Virginia turnovers tightened the game further, but Green delivered at the free-throw line, knocking down four straight shots to keep the Knights ahead by nine with 1:30 remaining.

McConkie added two key free throws, while Abe Connolly secured a crucial rebound on the defensive end. Davis, Mason Hunter, and Johnson then sealed the victory from the line, with Hunter going a perfect 4-for-4 down the stretch to secure the 90–87 win.

Davis delivered a monster performance, finishing with a game-high 27 points on an ultra-efficient 9-of-10 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. His shooting performance is the fourth time in program history that a player has gone 9-for-10 from the floor.

Green finished with 21 points and five rebounds, while Ballstaedt and Johnson added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Knights look to carry their momentum into a big home matchup against conference leader and current No. 1 seed NC Wesleyan on Saturday, January 17, at 4:00 p.m. in Knight Arena.
