LYNCHBURG, Va. - A new season is officially underway for the reigning Division lll Men's Volleyball National Champions.
The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team showed out on their opening weekend, securing wins over Mount Aloysius and Randolph College in straight sets.
Game One
In their opener against Mount Aloysius, Isaac Carrillo guided the Knights attack with his 10 kills. Mark Tomlinson and Keanu Calles split the setting duties while Parker Bluth and Owen Christian made meaningful contributions at Libero.
13 aces from the Knights helped them dominate the Mounties from start to finish. Trajan Wadsworth had four of them in just one set, and Jack DeGraff clinched the win with an ace of his own.
Game Two
Southern Virginia's next challenger was the host of the tri-match, Randolph College. It marked the first action this season for returning All-American setter, Gehrig Tolman, who looked comfortable as can be.
In the first set, a Tommy Forese kill sparked a 6-0 Knights run to capture the lead and ultimately claim the opening frame.
Southern Virginia never trailed in the final two sets as they overwhelmed the Wildcats en route to a sweep. Brady Dastrup equaled Isaac Carrillo's output from the first game with ten kills of his own. Mitchell Barney stood in as libero in all three sets and tallied eight digs.
Looking Ahead
The competition quickly ramps up for Southern Virginia as they'll face an old CVC foe in their next matchup. It'll be the home opener for the Knights on Wednesday, January 21st at 7:00 PM against Randolph-Macon.
