Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia men's basketball team hosted nationally ranked No. 8 University of Mary Washington on Thursday night, falling to the Eagles 91–77.
Prior to tip-off, the Knights honored seniors Tillman Johnson and DJ Green with commemorative 1,000-point basketballs after both surpassed the 1,000-career-point milestone this season.
Southern Virginia came out firing, jumping to a 13–2 lead in the opening four minutes. However, Mary Washington responded with a decisive 17–2 run over the next four minutes to swing momentum and take control. The Eagles carried that energy into halftime, sending the Knights into the break trailing 45–30.
Despite the deficit, Southern Virginia controlled the glass in the first half, holding an 8–0 edge in offensive rebounds and a 20–11 advantage overall. Mary Washington found success from beyond the arc, connecting on 8-of-15 three-point attempts, while also capitalizing on turnovers.
Johnson paced the Knights in the first half with 10 points, while Jude Ballstaedt added six.
Coming out of the locker room, the Knights showed renewed energy, opening the half on a 5–0 run. Ballstaedt later knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven, but the Eagles' high-powered offense proved difficult to contain down the stretch as they pulled away to secure the 91–77 victory.
Johnson finished with a team-high 18 points, shooting 6-of-12 (50%) from the field and 3-of-5 (60%) from three-point range. Green added 16 points, while Ballstaedt recorded 12 points and nine rebounds. Austin Mitchell rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points on 4-of-5 (80%) shooting.
The Knights will look to close out the regular season on a high note as they host William Peace University on Saturday, with Senior Day recognition scheduled prior to the 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
