Buena Vista, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team opened its season on a sunny Saturday afternoon, falling in a doubleheader to the Muskies of Muskingum University.
Game One
Muskingum took control early, plating runs in the opening innings and keeping the Knights' offense in check. Southern Virginia threatened in both the third and fifth innings, highlighted by base hits from Mattison Christensen, but the Knights were unable to capitalize with runners on base. The Muskies maintained momentum throughout and secured a 9–0 victory in the opener.
Game Two
Game two saw Muskingum once again jump out to a fast start, scoring six runs across the first two innings to build a sizable lead.
Southern Virginia began to chip away in the fourth inning. Berkeley Whitten ignited the rally with a solo home run to right-center field. Kyleigh Staton and Eliza Patterson followed with base hits, and a walk by Morgan Rich loaded the bases. Christensen drew an RBI walk, and Addalyn Burch delivered a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 7–4.
The Muskies responded with a three-run sixth inning to pull away and close out the 10–4 win.
Rich, Whitten, and Patterson each recorded a pair of hits during the series, while Whitten's solo home run marked the Knights' first long ball of the season.
Southern Virginia continues its season-opening 10-game homestand on Tuesday, March 3, hosting Eastern Mennonite University at 2:00 p.m. The Knights split last year's series with the Royals.
