Lexington, Va. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team fell 17–8 to Washington & Lee University in a Rockbridge County clash between the two programs, as the Generals extended their winning streak over the Knights to four games.
Southern Virginia jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Seth Lloyd and Zack Geertsen each recorded hits to start the rally before Mason Jones launched a three-run home run to left-center field, giving the Knights a quick 3–0 advantage.
Washington & Lee responded immediately in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits to tie the game before adding another run in the second inning to take a 4–3 lead.
Offense slowed for both teams until the fourth inning when the Generals added another run to extend their lead to 5–3. Southern Virginia answered in the fifth as Lloyd and Geertsen continued their strong days at the plate, each hitting doubles to cut the deficit to 5–4, though the Knights were unable to bring home additional runs despite having runners in scoring position.
The Generals broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring eight runs on five hits while taking advantage of four Southern Virginia errors to push the lead to 13–4.
The Knights continued to battle offensively. Marcelino Leonardo Jr. came around to score on a double down the line from Brooks Burdette, and Lloyd later added an RBI groundout to trim the deficit to 13–6.
Southern Virginia added two more runs in the eighth inning. Conner Robley drew a leadoff walk before Lloyd and Geertsen delivered back-to-back hits for the third time in the game to make it 13–7. A sacrifice fly from Jones plated another run, cutting the score to 13–8.
Washington & Lee answered in the bottom of the eighth with four additional runs to close out the scoring and secure the 17–8 win.
Lloyd and Geertsen each finished with three hits for the Knights, while Jones led the team with four RBIs. On the mound, Max Ursenbach, Gavin Pittman, and Emerson Robinson each recorded scoreless innings in relief.
Southern Virginia now turns its attention to conference play as the Knights host reigning USA South champion Methodist University on Friday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
