Southern Virginia University Softball Plates 29 Runs in Sweep of Wilson College

Chambersburg, Pa. — The Southern Virginia University softball team got back on track in a big way, erupting for 29 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Phoenix of Wilson College, winning 18–9 and 11–0.

Game One – Southern Virginia 18, Wilson 9

The Knights came out swinging in game one, delivering a dominant offensive performance with 18 runs on 18 hits—both marks tied for the third-highest totals in program history.

Doubles from Berkeley Whitten and Taelor Ware jumpstarted the scoring, and Whitten added another RBI in the second inning with a bases-loaded walk. Kyleigh Staton followed with a double to left-center to push the lead to 7–0 after two innings.

Emmaline DeGroot extended the lead with a solo home run to make it 8–0, but Wilson responded with a strong rally in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to just one at 8–7.

Southern Virginia answered immediately in the fifth. Nevaeh Woodhouse led off with a triple, and Sophia Badell drove her in with a single up the middle. Whitten then delivered the big blow of the inning with a three-run home run, capping a five-run frame.

The Knights added four more runs in the seventh inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues while getting timely hits from Staton, Badell, and DeGroot to seal the 18–9 victory.

In the circle, Marni Bianchi threw 3.2 innings, while Malia Stauffer added three innings of work. Offensively, Eliza Patterson and DeGroot each recorded three hits, while Whitten led the way with five RBIs and two walks.

Game Two – Southern Virginia 11, Wilson 0

Southern Virginia carried its momentum into game two, opening the scoring with an RBI single from Badell in the first inning.

The Knights broke the game open in the second, plating four runs behind a string of singles from Morgan Rich, Patterson, Badell, and Staton.

Southern Virginia added to its lead in the fourth inning with five hits to extend the advantage, and the final run came in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Abigail Minx, securing the 11–0 shutout victory.

Addalyn Burch got the win on the mound going 5 innings with just two hits while Badell, Staton and Rich all tallied three hits a piece.

The Knights will continue their Pennsylvania road trip with a doubleheader against Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, March 21, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Southern Virginia last faced the Chargers in 2018, earning a doubleheader sweep.
