Patterson Breaks Program Record In Southern Virginia Women’s Lacrosse Victory Over Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Looking to end its slate of non-conference competition on a high note, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team squared off with Wilson College on a windy afternoon.

In a defensive-minded game, the Knights used a dominant second quarter to defeat the Phoenix 6-2, collecting their third win on the road this season.

In the first quarter, Southern Virginia sent several shots towards the opponents goal but was unable to find the game's first marker. Fortunately, their defense was equal to the task, and both teams ended the opening frame scoreless.

Even with the game short of scoring, the first quarter didn't end without a piece of history attached to it. Just over eight minutes after the opening draw, Ellie Patterson caused a Wilson College turnover, giving her 39 on the season which sets a new single-season program record.

Ricky Richards put Southern Virginia into the lead with a goal in the Knights' opening possession of the second. The floodgates were opened after that, as Patterson and Paysen Grandy added to the scoring to give the visitors a 5-0 lead by the end of the first half.

Savanna Burnett did her part in preserving the Knights lead, making six saves in the final two quarters to total eight on the day in between the pipes.

Sydney Knight eventually scored the game's final goal to make the score 6-2 before the final horn. Patterson caused two more turnovers after her record-breaker, giving her 41 total. It breaks a seven year old record, established by Jordan Gundersen in 2019.

Looking Ahead

It's all USA South opponents on the horizon for Southern Virginia, as they'll face four conference foes to close out the regular season. Next, they visit the reigning conference champion, Meredith, on Friday April 3rd at 2:00 PM.
