BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team made an emphatic return to the win column on Tuesday night.
After an offensive onslaught in the opening quarter, the Knights never looked back en route to a 21-9 victory to vault past Greensboro in the conference standings.
Southern Virginia blitzed the Pride with four goals less than five minutes after the opening faceoff, forcing an early Greensboro timeout.
The visitors finally stopped the bleeding by scoring their first two goals near the end of the quarter to trail 6-2.
The second quarter followed a similar trend, as River Jackson scored the first of four straight goals for Southern Virginia. This helped them take a 10-4 lead into the halftime break.
Ben Sluga was enjoying one of the best games of his career. The junior from Heber City, Utah racked up four goals and an assist while leading the team with three caused turnovers. Clay Haacke matched him with four goals of his own.
The Knights continued to spread the wealth on the attack over the final two quarters. Kirtis Drennen got in on the fun with under two minutes left in regulation, recording the first goal of his senior season.
Overall, Southern Virginia peppered the Pride with 37 shots on goal, tying a season high. In goal, Jace Lightfoot made 8 saves while Daniel Goold came in for the final six minutes and made one stop.
Looking Ahead
The Knights will wrap up a four game homestand this Friday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM when they welcome Brevard to Knight Stadium.
Southern Virginia won last year's matchup by a count of 23-4.
