Southern Virginia Men’s Volleyball Stuns No. 1 Juniata In Top Ten Clash

BUENA VISTA, Va. - With Knight Arena near full capacity, the Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team welcomed top ranked Juniata into the barn.

With huge implications on who might host the upcoming CVC tournament, the Knights showed no mercy in front of their fans, defeating Juniata in a sweep to secure a signature win.

Juniata got off to the hot start they were looking for, forcing a Southern Virginia timeout after taking an early 7-2 advantage.

However, momentum returned to the home team after a string of seven consecutive points vaulted the Knights into the lead.

The play leveled out the rest of the set until a block from Gehrig Tolman, Tommy Forese, and Jason Wang, capped a 3-0 run which helped Southern Virginia claim the first set, 25-23.

With any potential nerves settled after taking a 1-0 set lead, Southern Virginia was dominant in the second frame. They brought the heat from the service line, totaling nine aces, four of which came off the hand of the high-flying David Ward.

Tommy Forese ignited the crowd late in the second after combining with Wang for another block to clinch a 2-0 lead, putting the top team in the land on the brink of defeat.

Despite a competitive third set, the outcome never seemed in doubt for the Knights who were amped in front of a loud Knight Arena.

Gehrig Tolman dished out 28 assists, but also impressed defensively, making a highlight reel play in the third by using his foot to keep the ball alive, leading to another Southern Virginia point.

The huge win was punctuated by another ace from David Ward, giving the Knights their second win against a top twenty opponent. Tommy Forese led with 11 kills while Nathan Mitchell added four blocks.

Looking Ahead

To continue a busy weekend, Southern Virginia will visit Bridgewater for their tri-match, tomorrow, March 7th. First, they'll face Randolph-Macon at 3:00 PM.
