GRANVILLE, Ohio. - In their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, the USA South champions, Southern Virginia University, had their season come to a close after a loss to Denison on Friday evening.
Denison, hosts of this portion of the bracket and a top ten team nationally, got the early jump on the Knights to produce a double digit lead after the first quarter.
Southern Virginia found their footing in the second as their seniors stepped up. Ruth Kempler notched a couple of buckets and had success getting to the free throw line. Abigail Snyder also seemed to find her groove, and collectively the Knights managed to outrebound their opponents.
However, the early deficit proved too much. A home crowd advantage for the 'Big Red' was also a contributing factor to their success, and they marched on to the next round after an 82-47 decision.
The loss marks the last career game for one of the most successful classes in Southern Virginia women's basketball history.
Maria Savvun, Abigail Snyder, Jocelyn Stewart, Ruth Kempler, and Aysia Foster have been a part of three conference championships, and have their names littered throughout the program record books.
The Knights finish the season with 21 wins, tied for fourth most in program history. Head Coach Lynette Schroeder's squad continues to be a team on the rise amongst their Division lll competitors.
