Brevard, N.C. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team secured a series victory over Brevard College, taking the first two games 7–2 and 14–6 before falling in a close finale.
Game 1: Southern Virginia 7, Brevard 2
The Tornadoes struck early, scoring their only two runs in the two innings, but Zack Geertsen settled in and dominated the rest of the way.
Marcelino Leonardo Jr. tied the game in the fourth with a double to left-center, and Geertsen gave the Knights the lead in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle. Southern Virginia added insurance in the ninth, using singles from Conner Robley, Seth Lloyd, and Geertsen to plate three runs and seal the 7–2 win.
Geertsen was outstanding on the mound, tossing his first complete game of the season and allowing just two runs over nine innings.
Game 2: Southern Virginia 14, Brevard 6
The Knights' offense came alive in Game 2, powering Southern Virginia to a 14–6 victory to clinch the series.
Southern Virginia wasted no time getting on the board, as Geertsen tripled to right field, Mason Jones followed with a double, and Ben Agnew drove in a run with a single to give the Knights an early 2–0 lead.
They added another run in the third when Robley singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Lloyd, and scored on an RBI single from Geertsen.
The Knights broke the game open in the fourth, stringing together hits from Agnew, Garrett Stauffer, and Ryan Farris to score two runs. Robley later drove in Farris to extend the lead to 6–0.
After Brevard cut into the deficit, Southern Virginia responded with a four-run seventh inning. Hits from Agnew, Stauffer, and Brooks Burdette set the table, while Lloyd delivered a key RBI single to push the lead into double digits.
The Knights added four more runs in the ninth behind consecutive singles from Burdette, Robley, Lloyd, and Geertsen to cap the 14–6 win.
Game 3: Brevard 14, Southern Virginia 13
Brevard jumped out to an early lead in the series finale, but the Knights battled back. Mason Jones launched a three-run home run to center, and Ryan Farris followed with a triple and came all the way around to score, helping Southern Virginia take a 7–3 lead.
However, the Tornadoes responded with a surge, scoring all 14 of their runs across four innings to regain control.
Southern Virginia continued to fight late in the game. Singles from Leonardo Jr. and Tyler Bales, along with a hit-by-pitch to Robley, loaded the bases before Lloyd brought in two runs with a sacrifice fly to make it 14–10.
In the seventh, singles from Rossi and Agnew, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Leonardo Jr., loaded the bases again. Bales delivered an RBI single, and Robley added a run with a groundout to cut the deficit to 14–12.
Leonardo Jr. added a solo home run in the ninth, but the Knights fell just short, 14–13. Agnew also contributed on the mound, throwing three scoreless innings in relief.
Geertsen led the Knights in the series with eight hits and a .750 on-base percentage, while Mason Jones recorded five hits and five RBIs with a .500 on-base percentage.
Southern Virginia moves to 7–7 in conference play and will take a break from conference action with a non-conference matchup at Roanoke College on Tuesday, April 14 at 6:00 p.m.
