KENOSHA, WI. - After winning their opening round matchup of the NCAA tournament on Friday, the Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team's national title defense came to an end at the hands of Carthage on Saturday night.
After dropping the opening set, the Knights fought back to take control of set two. After a pair of kills from Tommy Forese, Southern Virginia found themselves up 19-13 to force a Carthage timeout.
However, the hosts snatched back the momentum and cut into the deficit. They scored the final four points to steal the set from the Knights, putting the defending champs on the brink.
In the third, Southern Virginia couldn't recover. The Firebirds eventually closed out a sweep in front of their home crowd to advance to the NCAA Final Four, slated for the upcoming weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The Knights close another impressive season with 29 wins and another CVC regular season title. Three players received all-conference honors, including CVC Player of the Year, Gehrig Tolman, who also garnered Second Team All-America honors.
