Cary, NC – The Southern Virginia University baseball team took over in the final inning to secure a 9–6 opening win against the Pacers of William Peace.
A pair of singles in the first inning gave the Pacers the lead, but the Knights answered right away. Back-to-back doubles from Mason Jones and Garrett Stauffer got things going, and Marcelino Leonardo Jr. drove in Stauffer with a single through the right side.
The Knights added another run in the fourth, as Stauffer led off the inning with a single, and a pair of Pacer errors made it 3–1. However, William Peace responded by tying the game at 3–3 in the bottom of the inning.
Southern Virginia regained the lead when Jones singled up the middle and stole second, setting up another Stauffer double—this one down the left-field line—to make it 4–3. The Pacers answered again in the bottom half, scoring twice to take a 5–4 lead.
William Peace extended its advantage to 6–4 before the Knights mounted a rally in their final at-bat. Tyler Bales started things off with a walk, followed by a single from Conner Robley to apply pressure. Ben Agnew reached on a bunt single, and Seth Lloyd delivered an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game. Mason Jones then broke it open with a three-run home run to give the Knights a 9–6 lead.
Brady Steelman sealed the win on the mound, recording three straight flyouts in the bottom of the inning.
The victory clinches a conference playoff berth for the Knights.
Southern Virginia will conclude the regular season with a doubleheader tomorrow against the Pacers as they battle for playoff seeding.
