Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia softball team opened its six-game homestand with a sweep over William Peace University, taking game one 1-0 before securing a 3-2 walk-off victory in game two.
The Knights managed just three hits in the opener, but it was all they needed thanks to a dominant performance in the circle from Emmaline DeGroot. The right-hander tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits over seven innings.
Southern Virginia pushed across the game's only run in the first inning after a single from Makenzie Grose and a sacrifice from Berkeley Whitten. The Knights' defense and pitching made the early run stand up in the 1-0 win.
Game two featured more offense from both sides, with the Pacers jumping out to an early 2-0 lead through three innings.
The Knights responded in the sixth inning when Whitten led off with a solo home run to cut the deficit to one. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Southern Virginia delivered in dramatic fashion. With two outs, Sophia Badell singled to center field to score Eliza Patterson and tie the game. On the same play, a throwing error allowed Grose to race home, sealing the 3-2 walk-off victory.
Malia Stauffer earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs over seven innings.
Patterson led the offense with three hits, while Grace Norman delivered a key pinch-hit late in the game to spark the comeback.
The Knights return to action Saturday, April 4, with a doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan beginning at 1:00 p.m. as they look to carry the momentum forward.
