Tigers Edge Southern Virginia Men’s Soccer In Non-Conference Bout

BUENA VISTA, Va. - Back on their home turf for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer squared off with another regional foe, Hampden-Sydney. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers found the eventual game winner early in the second to remain unbeaten this season.

A premier team in the region, Hampden-Sydney applied early pressure on the attack. However, the Knights did well in keeping balls to the outside, preventing any shots from getting through to starting keeper Isaac Northcutt.

In the 42nd minute, Northcutt was called upon to stop a point blank shot off of a header after a pass from just outside the box. He acrobatically kicked it away to help Southern Virginia enter the half even.

In the second frame, the Tigers continued with sustained pressure toward the Knights cage. Eventually, they were rewarded with a goal just seven minutes into the half to assume control.

Southern Virginia looked to push back as the physicality ramped up. While scoring chances were limited, Landon Stock did have an opportunity in the waning seconds of the match after a nice feed from Logan Gubler. However, his shot headed to the left side of the cage was calmly grabbed by the keeper.

Looking Ahead

The team will remain at Knight Stadium for their next match on Saturday, September 19th against Randolph-Macon. It'll be the Knights final non-conference home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
