Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team scored a season-high eight goals Monday night, cruising to an 8-0 nonconference victory over the Bruins of Bob Jones University.
The Knights controlled the match from start to finish, but it took some time to break through. Southern Virginia opened with 15 consecutive shots and four corner kicks before finally finding the back of the net. Xoie Warner fired a shot following a corner kick that was saved, but Olivia Hapgood followed up on the rebound and scored to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Southern Virginia doubled its advantage just 30 seconds later, as Riley Mills launched a 30-yard shot that found the top of the net in the 41st minute.
The Knights added one more goal before halftime, with just 20 seconds remaining in the half. Warner slipped a shot underneath the goalkeeper after receiving a pass into the middle from Desana Grabarczyk, giving Southern Virginia a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Knights finished the first half with a commanding 20-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Southern Virginia continued its offensive pressure coming out of halftime. Ashley Hamblin scored in the 46th minute, sending a shot into the top-right corner following a cross from Halle Willardson. McKenna Currey added another goal in the 58th minute, scoring off a free kick just outside the box.
Mills added her second goal of the night in the 62nd minute to push the lead to 6-0. Saydee Sutarik followed with a goal off an assist from Warner before Lottie Smith capped the scoring to secure the 8-0 victory.
With the win, Southern Virginia has now won four consecutive matches and will remain home for its next contest. The Knights host Pfeiffer University on Saturday, Oct. 3. Southern Virginia has won four straight meetings against the Falcons.
