Ashland, VA - The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team fell in its third contest of the season as a strong second half from the Hampden-Sydney Yellow Jackets lifted them to a 2-1 victory.
The Knights pressured early and often in the first half, earning two straight corner kicks followed by a pair of shots before Ashlee Kelsey put the Knights on the board. McKenna Currey placed a long pass up the middle, where Kelsey found the back of the net with only the goalkeeper between her and the goal.
The Knights continued to apply pressure throughout the first half, tallying two more shots and corner kicks to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Knights returned to the field with pressure out of the half, with Warner having her shot saved before the Yellow Jackets turned the advantage. Hampden-Sydney recorded two shots before finding the equalizer in the 55th minute. Back-to-back corner kicks then set up the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to give the Yellow Jackets the 2-1 victory.
The Knights remained within striking distance throughout the contest, trailing Randolph-Macon in shots, 14-12, and corners, 8-5, but ultimately fell just short.
Southern Virginia looks to bounce back when it returns home for a two-game homestand, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9, against Roanoke College at 7 p.m.
