Coach Brett Schroeder serves as Associate Head Coach for women's basketball at Southern Virginia University. He brings over 10 years of extensive coaching experience and a deep commitment to player development and recruiting. A former athlete, Coach Brett (’08) played for the Southern Virginia men’s basketball team, serving as captain for two seasons. He holds program records for the most career steals and games played, showcasing his dedication and skill on the court.
Coach Brett graduated with a degree in Business Management and Leadership, in an emphasis in finance, which has helped shape his strategic approach to coaching. Before transitioning into coaching, he held multiple regional positions in Utah for a national bank, where he developed strong leadership and organizational skills.
Prior to his current role, Coach Schroeder gained valuable experience as a volunteer coach at Skyline High School and Westminster College in Utah. During these tenures, he established a reputation for identifying and nurturing talent, helping numerous athletes advance to higher levels of competition. Mainly working with the post players, he helped develop several all-region and all-conference players, respectfully. At Southern Virginia University, Coach Schroeder is focused on implementing effective training programs that enhance individual skills while promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.
His keen eye for talent and expertise in recruiting have been instrumental in attracting skilled players to the program, further strengthening the team’s competitiveness. During his time at Southern Virginia, he's helped multiple players earn all-conference and all-tournament awards. Some notable players include Katie Garrish, Nan Christensen, and Addison Newman. Garrish (’22) averaged 16.0 points per game in 102 games in her career (1633 total points), while shooting 52.8 percent from the floor. She led all of Division III in blocks per game (3.5) and double-doubles (23). Her performance earned her USA South Defensive Player of the Year as well as First Team All-Conference Honors. Christensen (’22) averaged 14.0 points per game in 66 games in her career (1056 total points), while shooting 46.9 percent from the floor. Christensen was also named to the First Team All-Conference in the USA South. Newman (’25) with her stellar performance in the 2024 USA South Conference Tournament, earned her both the USA South All-Tournament MVP and USA South All-Tournament Team awards.
Beyond coaching, Coach Brett emphasizes the importance of academic success and community engagement, believing that basketball is a platform for teaching life skills. He encourages his players to excel both on the court and in their studies. Known for his strategic insight and motivational leadership, Coach Brett fosters a culture of hard work, resilience, and continuous improvement. He is dedicated to staying current with the latest coaching techniques and trends in the sport. Outside of basketball, Coach Brett enjoys spending time with his family, playing pickup games, and volunteering with local youth programs. His passion for the game and commitment to developing young athletes drive him to inspire and empower his players.
