Brigg Hoopes was named Head Coach of the men's wrestling team in 2022. In his first year, Hoopes led the Knights to a 4-5 record, including a 3-2 mark in Knight Arena. He guided several wrestlers to standout performances, including Morgan Peterson who posted a 10-1 record.
Most recently, he helped the team qualify for the NCAA Region 4 meet for the third straight year, including an eighth place finish from Matthew Papa in the 125 lbs. class. In 2025, his team was recognized as an NWCA Scholar All-America Team. Papa was named an Individual Scholar All-America.
Prior to coming to Southern Virginia, Hoopes wrestled for Utah Valley University as a walk-on where he was put onto scholarship for two years. During his time with the Wolverines, Hoopes was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree. During his high school campaign, Hoopes was a two-time state placer, and finished as the runner up in the state of Wyoming his senior year.Â
After serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission, the Star Valley, Wyoming native trained with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club at Penn State where he focused and expanded his skills and knowledge of the sport before attending Utah Valley.

Along with competing, Hoopes assisted with coaching all student-athletes within the UVU Student-Athlete Wellness Center, where he helped develop training programs. Hoopes also provided private lessons to high school wrestlers within the area where he helped coach multiple state champions.Â
