Josh Monsen was named Director of Athletics for Southern Virginia University in March, 2025. Previously, he was the Assistant Director of Athletics for Academics and Operations from 2020-2023, before serving as Deputy Director of Athletics for one year.
Since his appointment, the Knights have won 13 USA South championships, qualified for 16 NCAA Championship events, and won the 2025 NCAA Division lll Men's Volleyball title.
Monsen arrived in Buena Vista in 2018 after being named Southern Virginia's Sports Information Director. He quickly enhanced the university's athletic communications team and elevated the visibility of its programs before his promotion to Assistant Athletic Director.
"We really want our students to have a holistic approach in their college experience, and athletics is a big part of that," said Monsen. "College is all about core memories, and with over 60% of our students being members of at least one team, I want them to have the best memories of their time here as a Knight both on the court and in the classroom."
Before joining the Southern Virginia staff, Monsen graduated from Gonzaga University with a Master's of Sports Management and Administration.
He received his bachelor's degree from Utah Valley University while competing on the Wolverines cross country and track and field teams. During his studies, Monsen worked with Utah Valley’s sports information department for two years.
Monsen received first and second team All-WAC honors in cross country and track and field, as well as All-Academic honors for track and field.
He served as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Spokane, Washington. He and his wife, JaLeigh, live in Lexington with their three kids Mack, Sutton, and Booker.
