Porter Jones is an Assistant Sports Performance Coach at Southern Virginia University, where he also had the privilege of earning his undergraduate degree. He graduated with a degree in Biology, supplemented by minors in Psychology and Athletic Training, as well as concentrations in Coaching, Sports Management, and Honors.

Before stepping into a full-time role, Coach Jones dedicated three years as a student intern with Southern Virginia University’s Sports Performance Department. This invaluable experience allowed him to develop hands-on skills in athlete development and performance optimization, paving the way for his current position.

As a student-athlete, he competed in three sports at Southern Virginia University: Track and Field, Cross Country, and Swimming. With 17 years of competitive swimming experience and 12 years of running, he brings a deep understanding of discipline, endurance, and teamwork to his coaching practice. Originally from Pierre, South Dakota, his journey as an athlete and coach has been shaped by perseverance and a passion for sports.

A defining chapter in his life was being diagnosed with Perthes disease in his right hip during childhood. Overcoming and living with this challenge instilled resilience and has become a cornerstone of his coaching philosophy. He is passionate about inspiring and empowering athletes with past or present injuries to realize their full potential and achieve success in their athletic endeavors.

In addition to his coaching role, Porter Jones holds the NSCA-CSCS certification, underscoring his commitment to professional excellence in strength and conditioning. Beyond sports, he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he developed leadership, empathy, and a dedication to service that he carries into his work.

Porter Jones is honored to be a part of the Southern Virginia University community, contributing to the development of student-athletes and helping them excel both on and off the field.
