BUENA VISTA, Va. Five second-half goals by the Southern Virginia
Men's Soccer team overwhelmed the visiting Concord team and paced
them to a 5-1 Senior Day victory. The Knights fell early in the
first half as they surrendered a free kick just outside the 18. The
following shot beat Keeper Ben May to the far post, and Concord had
the lead.
"We were not as organized as we should have been," said Head
Coach Tom Longenecker. "They played a good passing game, and we
were a little rushed in that first half. I felt that we could beat
them, but they needed to see that it was the end of the season.
They needed to play like there would be no more soccer because
there won't be for this season."
The Knights responded quickly, and the second half flipped
towards SVU as Chris Teerlink scooped up a through ball from
Francisco Osegueda and beat the charging Mountain Lion keeper to
deadlock the game. The offside trap for Concord was beaten again as
Marcus Davidson streaked on to another through ball and hit the
ball to the far netting for a lead the Knights would not give up.
A testy affair got heated in the second half, as Concord had
several yellow cards issued to players, and also had two players
ejected to go down to nine men for the remainder of the game. The
Knights were in no mood to overlook the advantage, and Josh Patino
raced through again to hit a ball past the luckless visiting
keeper. A pair of Osegueda goals sealed the win, and provided
the Knights with a winning home record, and an overall winning
record for the first time since 2003.
"I am so proud of these guys," said Longenecker. "They have
played such great soccer. They have come together as a team, and
they have really stepped up this season. We were truly a team, and
our results have been so encouraging for everyone. I'm especially
happy for our seniors."
The Knights celebrated the careers of five seniors before the
game started. The group includes David Haws, Jake Katzenback,
Derrick Maggard, Cisco Osegueda, and Geoffrey Whitney.
