BUENA VISTA, Va. Southern Virginia Men's Soccer welcomed
familiar foe Washington & Lee to the new soccer field, but
could not get a victory, losing 2-0. The Knights surrendered two
goals in the first half, and were unable to overcome the deficit.
The first General goal came within the first fifteen minutes of
the game. SVU had been pressing, and already had had several
attacking moments to take the lead. The visitor's goal changed the
game, and the Knights were on the chase to tie up the game.
"I'm not sure if it was against the run of play, but it
definitely was not a foregone conclusion that they were going to
score at that point," said Head Coach Tom Longenecker. "I'm proud
of the guys for how they regrouped. They went back at it, and Cisco
(Osegueda) had some great opportunities to make it even."
The tying goal was not to be as W&L put in an insurance goal
twenty minutes later. Despite the two-goal deficit, SVU created
plenty of offensive attacks to get on the scoreboard, and this
effort is a positive for Longenecker.
"Teams can roll over and die when they get into that kind of a
situation," said Longenecker. "But we have experienced
upperclassmen who stabilized us, and gave us chances to get back in
the game. We're still growing, and getting better."
SVU now sits at 2-2 on the season. The Knights will get a chance
to rebound when they travel to play at Averett Sept. 18. Kickoff is
scheduled for 4:00.
