HARRISONBURG, Va. The Southern Virginia Women's Soccer team
could not get back in to the win column as they dropped a close
game to EMU 2-0. The Knights let in a first half goal, and were
under pressure for portions of the first half, but held on to keep
the game close. The second half was an improved performance, and
the Knights had several opportunities to tie up the match.
EMU was able to put the game away with three minutes left in the
game, as a goal mouth scramble went against SVU, and the Lady
Royals closed out the game for their second win of the season. Both
teams now sit at 2-3 on the season.
"We've had two tough opponents in the past week," said Head
Coach Matt Grawrock. "We're battling, and making a good effort, but
our execution is a little off. It's what can happen when you have
such a young team. The inexperience can show. We'll regroup, and
get after it for our next game.
Grawrock was quick to praise the efforts of Emma Alkonis and
Melanee Guymon who lead the attack in the second half on the EMU
goal. Jaylynn Rust also drew praise for her efforts in the
defensive third of the field.
"It seems we have a few standout performances every game," said
Grawrock. "Our biggest challenge will be to move from a few
individual standouts, to a collective standout effort on the part
of the whole team. I think we're almost there. Losses can help us
learn, but I'd prefer to win and learn."
The Knights will have a chance to apply new lessons when they
face off against Trinity (DC) Sept. 18. Kickoff is set for 3:30 at
Trinity.
