MURFREESBORO, NC. Two goals from Cisco Osegueda pushed the
Southern Virginia Men's Soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Chowan
University. Osegueda's first goal came in the 35th minute of the
first half and pushed the Knights to a 2-0 lead heading in to the
break.
David Haws powered home a driven cross from Josh Patino in the
4th minute of the game to give the Knights an early hold on the
game. Chowan bounced back, and had good chances to tie the game,
but the Mike Wilson lead defense held firm, and allowed the
visitors to gradually increase their control over the game.
Osegueda's second provided the team with the breathing room they
needed to hold out and secure the win.
"We were trying a new plan, as far as the run of play is
concerned," said Head Coach Tom Longenecker. "I think we had some
levels of success today with the style of play, but we can still
improve on it. It's great to back in the win column though!"
Osegueda finished the game off at the 56:13 mark of the second
when he put a looping bicycle kick over the stranded Chowan keeper.
The Hawks battled back, and four minutes later were on the board.
The last half hour was a tense back-and-forth game with both sides
having several chances to increase or decrease the lead. The
competitive nature of the game also showed up with over 25 fouls
called between the two teams.
"They wanted the win, just as much as we did," said Longenecker.
"We switched at the end to a different formation to give us some
cover because they were pressing very hard. I'm proud of the guys
for their ability to get the lead and hold it, especially against
strong opposition."
The Knights head back on the road Sept. 25 as they head to
Galluadet for a game. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 when the
Knights will look to improve on their 3-3 record.
