WASHINGTON, D.C. 4 Second-half goals blew open a scoreless tie
and pushed the Southern Virginia Men's Soccer team to a 4-1
victory. The first half the game was one-sided as the
visiting Knights had possession of the ball the majority of the
time but after 45 minutes the score was the same, 0-0. SVU launched
25 shot, but could not get past a stubborn Bison defense, and
goalie who recorded nearly a dozen saves.
The second half turned quickly, as Cisco Osegueda and Dax
Farnsworth scored 6 seconds apart a minute and a half into
the second half. The Knights continued the offensive assault and
Osegueda punched in another goal, as the Knights completed the win
with another goal late before the Bison got on the scoresheet to
avoid the shutout.
"We made things interesting in the first half," said Head Coach
Tom Longenecker. "It was a little frustrating to get the shots off,
put them on net and not get it in. I think we were forcing the
issue a little too much. But we relaxed, and got the goals in the
second half. It's a good win for us."
Osegueda led the Knights with two goals and one assist. SVU out
shot GU 41-5 and took 12 corner kicks. SVU's two goals in six
seconds is a second more then the NCAA Division III record for
fastest consecutive goals by the same team, which was set by
Rose-Hulman in 2002.
The Knights will hit the road again as they travel to Front
Royal to face off against Christendom, a fellow USCAA team, Sept.
28. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm. The Knights now sit at 4-3 on
the season.
