BUENA VISTA, Va. Led by a gritty performance from goalie Mariah
Flake, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team
defeated the Greensboro College Pride 2-0 in front of a home crowd
on a beautiful, fall Saturday.
Southern Virginia set the tone early against Greensboro as
junior Melanee
Guymon nearly scored in the opening minute of play. The Knights
controlled possession for most of the first half, outshooting The
Pride 11-6 in the period.
After several near goals, the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the
24th minute when freshman midfielder Bryndel Kindred
scored her first goal of the season off of an assist from sophomore
Amber
Key. Junior forward Maddie Wiscombe also netted her first goal
of the season in the 39th minute on an assist from
junior Emma Alkonis
to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage heading into the half.
The second half was slowed by physical play on both sides of the
ball; Southern Virginia finished the match with six fouls, while
Greensboro was whistled for 7 fouls in the contest. Despite being
outshot 7-5 in the second half, the Knights did not allow
Greensboro to close the gap on their first half lead.
Flake, deserves special recognition for her performance in the
shutout as she recorded 7 saves in the match without allowing a
single goal. Flake wowed the crowd in the final minute of play with
an incredible, leaping save on a near perfect Greensboro attempt
from midfield.
The Knights return to action next week when they host the
University of Charleston on Sept. 21. The match will take place on
The Fields of Southern Virginia University at 4 p.m
