BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Southern Virginia University
women's soccer team followed Saturday's win at NCAA
D.II Ohio Valley University with an impressive 2-1 victory Monday
afternoon over the visiting NCAA D.II Shepherd University Rams.
Southern Virginia's consecutive victories mark the
Knights' first winning streak of the 2010 season.
Southern Virginia opened the match with confidence and
controlled possession throughout much of the opening period.
Freshman Bryndel Kindred helped set the tone for the Knights when
she scored in the 15th minute of play on a shot which
ricocheted off the crossbar and into the visitor's goal.
Kindred, who also scored in Saturday's contest, leads the
Knights in total goals with five on the season.
Sophomore Kendra Heim added to Southern Virginia's
advantage five minutes later when she knocked in a loose ball after
it was bobbled by Shepherd's goalie. The Knights closed the
first period with a 2-0 lead, having outshot the Rams 9-1 in the
half.
The second half was more evenly matched and momentum slowly
shifted to the Rams who were able to fire eight shots in the period
compared to the Knights' six. Despite being outshot in the
half, Southern Virginia's defense, led by Tamara Nagle and
Michelle Riddle, was able to hold Shepherd scoreless until the
90th minute when the Rams finally found the back of the
net.
Despite the late push from the Rams, the Knights' pair of
first half goals proved enough to secure an important home
victory. Mariah Flake, who played on goal for Southern
Virginia, recorded three saves in the match, while Briar Sands took
a break from the goal and contributed to the win with a strong game
in the field.
The Knights look to continue their current streak on Wednesday,
Sept. 27 when they travel to face Washington Adventist University.
The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
