HARRISONBURG, Va. – Melanee Guymon's double overtime goal broke a 0-0 tie in the 102nd minute of play and lifted the visiting Southern Virginia University women's soccer team to victory Wednesday night over their host, the Eastern Mennonite Lady Royals.

Both Southern Virginia and Eastern Mennonite entered the game seeking their first victory of the young season and the match was closely contested throughout. Southern Virginia's keeper, Briar Sands, recorded her first of five saves just 21 seconds into the contest. The Knights responded with their own shot on goal two minutes later, but despite eight first-half shots by the Knights and seven by the Lady Royals, the game remained scoreless at the half.

Southern Virginia took greater control of the game in the second half, outshooting Eastern Mennonite 12-5 in that period, but neither team was able to find the net before the end of regulation. The Knights had two shots deflect off the crossbar and one off the post during the second half, while their goalie, Sands, turned away back-to-back Lady Royal shots in the 68th minute to keep the game scoreless. Southern Virginia defenders, Michelle Riddle and Tamara Nagle, also played strong games to help keep the Eastern Mennonite attack at bay.

Both overtime periods were controlled by Southern Virginia, who did not allow Eastern Mennonite a shot in extra time. The Knights managed four shots in the two overtimes, including the game winner by Guymon, who was assisted on the goal by Kendra Heim. The victory gave Southern Virginia (1-2-0) its first win of the season as Eastern Mennonite (0-2-1) remains winless on the year.

The Knights will face a quick turnaround as they travel to face Shenandoah University on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
