Men's Basketball Loses Momentum in Defeat to Mary Washington

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Despite an 18-point effort from sophomore guard Cody Hosier off the bench, the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team fell to visiting Mary Washington, 82-64, Wednesday night at Knight Sports Arena.

The Alamo, Nevada, native shot 6-7 from three-point range during the game and 4-5 in the first half to keep the Knights in the game.

Southern Virginia got off to a rough start to the game, quickly falling to a 12-0 deficit five minutes in before a Ben Canevari jumper stopped the drought. The Knights cut the disadvantage to 14-8 off an alley-oop dunk by David Baety off the glass provided by Kevin Walker on a fast break.

Mary Washington jumped to a 28-14 advantage after a trey and 39-23 moments later to provide bursts the Knights could never recover from. Southern Virginia would get to within three with 15 minutes remaining on a Walker three-pointer, but the Eagles again pulled away en route to the victory.

Baety finished second on the team with 14 points while center Michael Neufville provided nine points for the Knights. Canevari scored six points on the evening.

The Eagles were led by guard Ty Thurston, who score 22 points going 9-12 from the field while guard Brent Mahoney tallied 14 points on 4-8 shooting.

Southern Virginia hits the road this weekend for a CAC matchup Saturday at York College. Tip off is slated for a 3 p.m. start in York, Pennsylvania.
